How to increase your average basket with loyalty tiers

To grow the revenue of an independent business, most owners first look to attract more customers or to get them to visit more often. Yet the fastest and most profitable lever is the amount spent at each checkout: the average basket, also known as average transaction value.

A classic linear stamp card (one stamp per visit) makes no distinction between a customer who spends €8 and one who spends €45. It rewards showing up, not the amount spent.

57%
According to a global study by the consulting firm Accenture (Global Consumer Pulse, 25,426 consumers in 33 countries), 57% of consumers spend more with the brands they are loyal to.

How do you design tiers that naturally nudge customers to add one more item to their basket? Here is the step-by-step method.

The “average basket + 20%” rule for setting your first tier

The most common mistake is to reward what customers already spend spontaneously. If your shop’s average basket is €25, granting a reward from €20 in purchases brings no gain: you give up margin on sales you had already made.

To trigger an additional purchase, apply a simple calculation. The first threshold for a bonus (a free product, an exclusive gift, an immediate discount) should sit between 15% and 25% above your real average basket.

A worked example in the shop

Starting point
Your average basket is €30.
The target threshold
You set the activation tier at €36 (€30 × 1.20).
What the customer does at checkout
A shopper arrives with €29 of items. Discovering they are only €7 short of unlocking the next tier, they spontaneously reach for an impulse item (an accessory, a treat, a small care product) placed near the counter.

This small psychological trade-off turns an ordinary sale into a receipt worth nearly a quarter more.

Two simple ways to use tiers in your shop

To encourage customers to spend more, you have two very simple options to put in place:

The immediate tier

To boost today’s basket

You reward the customer if they reach a specific amount on today’s receipt.

“Spend €35 today and walk out with a free product.”

Why it works. If the customer’s total is €28, they will pick up a small €7 item near the register so they don’t miss the offer. You raise their receipt total on the spot.

Progressive tiers

To keep customers motivated over time

Instead of imposing a single, distant goal (for example, waiting for 100 points to get a gift), you create intermediate steps.

  1. At 30 points: a free drink.
  2. At 60 points: a free dessert or accessory.
  3. At 100 points: a €15 voucher or a full service.

Why it works. If every euro spent earns 1 point, customers are naturally tempted to spend a little more at each visit to reach the next tier they care about sooner.

The psychology of “minimal effort”: capitalizing on impulse purchases

In consumer psychology, the goal-gradient effect shows that the closer people feel to a concrete goal, the more they speed up to close the gap.

For your tiers to work at full strength, three concrete adjustments should be made in the shop:

  • Set up a cross-selling zone at the register

Place “bridge” items at accessible prices (between €4 and €9) next to the payment terminal to make it easier to reach the threshold.

  • Train your team in positive suggestion

The line at the register shouldn’t be an aggressive sales pitch, but friendly information.

  • Make progress visible in real time

If customers can’t see where they stand, the tier is pointless. The progress bar must be viewable instantly on their smartphone.

A practical table by type of business

Business typeStarting average basketTier threshold set (+20 to 25%, rounded)Reward unlockedSuggested impulse items
Fashion boutique / concept store€55.00€68.001 exclusive pouchSocks, costume jewelry, tote bag
Delicatessen / wine shop€32.00€40.001 free jar of artisan spreadLocal jams, spices, savory crackers
Coffee shop / quick service€9.50€12.00Free drink on the next visitPastry of the day, cookie, fresh-squeezed juice
Hair salon / beauty studio€42.00€52.00Full diagnostic or a mini care productTravel-size dry shampoo, split-end serum

The amounts above are illustrations of the method, shown in euros. The same logic works in any currency: take your own average basket and add 20%.

How mobile Wallet turns tiers into a reflex

One of the major limits of older systems was opaque accounts: customers didn’t know their points balance and had no idea how much to spend to reach the next tier.

By putting your loyalty card directly into Apple Wallet and Google Wallet:

The progress gauge is visible at all times: customers check their balance and the program tiers at a glance, in the Wallet app on their iPhone or in Google Wallet.

Automatic push alerts create the desire: you can set up a contextual message for when a customer gets close to the next tier.

On the Pro and Business plans, an automatic rule sends this message when the customer’s balance reaches a threshold you set just below the tier (for example 85 points for a tier at 100). It goes out once per customer, to those who agreed to receive your offers.

This visibility turns a simple discount card into a playful, always-on engagement tool.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What price gap should I set between tiers?

Keep tiers within reach. The ideal gap is between two and three average visits. If the average basket is €30, setting tiers at €40, €100 and €180 gives motivating intermediate steps without wearing customers out.

Do my staff have time to explain the tiers at the register?

Yes, if the system is visual. When the customer shows their mobile card at checkout, the business owner or employee sees the balance and the program’s tiers on screen: they spot the gap at a glance and can slip in a suggestion in two seconds without slowing down checkout.

Won’t tiers frustrate customers who spend less?

No, because the first tier is reachable from the first few visits. The higher tiers are perceived as a rewarding goal, not a barrier. Every purchase continues to count.

Roll out custom loyalty tiers with Cartia

Raising your average basket doesn’t require investing in complex point-of-sale software or constantly reprinting obsolete cardboard cards.

With Cartia, you set up your points or tiers loyalty system in 5 minutes:

  • No app to download: your customers scan a QR code, fill in a short form and add their pass to their mobile wallet.
  • Customizable points tiers: up to five reward tiers, with their thresholds (30, 60, 100 points…), to encourage your members to spend more at each visit. At the counter, the salesperson scans the card and credits the points for the receipt.
  • Progress push notifications: on the Pro and Business plans, let your customers know their reward is getting close, right on their phone’s lock screen, to trigger a trip to the register.
