Digital loyalty card for coffee shops

The coffee shop across the street is thirty steps away. Give people a reason to walk past it.

One stamp per visit, one drink free at the end, and that’s it: the coffee shop is the trade where the simplest program is also the best. The customer scans the QR code once to create their card, then shows it at the counter during payment.

Free plan: up to 50 customers, no credit card.

The short answer

What kind of loyalty program works for a café or coffee shop?

A coffee shop is where a loyalty card works best, for a simple reason: frequency. A morning regular comes in four or five times a week. The reward arrives quickly, it’s visible, and the program runs itself.

It’s also the business where friction is least tolerable. An espresso is paid for in thirty seconds. Anything that lengthens that gesture — digging out a damp paper card, explaining an app to install — will be dropped by your staff before the week is out.

“Buy X, get one free” is still the right format: customers understand it without being told, and that’s rarer than it looks. What’s open to debate is X. Turn it into money before you set it: eight visits at €3.50 is €28 spent before the free drink.

The chains think about it that way, too. Checked on September 4, 2026 on their public pages in France: the first reward comes at €15 of spend at French Coffee Shop, €30 at Starbucks, and €60 at Columbus Café. None of them counts stamps. Nothing says you have to copy them, but it gives you the benchmark you need to tell whether your threshold is generous or stingy: in euros, eight visits at €3.50 is €28, just under Starbucks.

What the digital card changes isn’t the mechanic: it’s that customers can no longer lose their card, that it sits in their phone next to their bank card, and that you finally know how many regulars you really have.

The problem

Stop stamping paper cards that end up stained or lost

Your customers already have their phone in hand to pay. Offer them a loyalty card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, with no app to install. Turn the morning coffee into a daily habit.

  • At the morning rush

One scan, one stamp, next customer. No more “I forgot my card,” no more paper card the team stamps on the customer’s behalf and files in a drawer.

  • For the customer

Their card is in their phone, next to their bank card. They pull it out at the same moment as their payment method, without thinking about it.

  • For the coffee shop

You get the number the paper card never gave you: how many customers really come back, and at what rhythm.

  • The paper card

The paper card tears, gets forgotten, and gives you no way to contact the latte lover who hasn’t been in for ten days.

  • With Cartia

A QR code at the counter, a short form filled in by the customer, and your brand sits in their phone next to their bank card. You then see how often your regulars really come back.

The recommended program

How many coffees before the free one?

Our setting: eight visits, the ninth drink free, customer’s choice. A coffee shop can support a shorter threshold than most businesses, and the reason is its margin.

Take an average drink at €3.50, somewhere between an espresso and a latte. Its ingredient cost (coffee, milk, cup) runs around €0.50; use your own real figure. After eight visits, the customer has spent €28 and walks away with a drink listed at €3.50.

Two numbers come out of that, and the whole point is not to confuse them. Your customer got one drink out of nine, or 11%: that’s what they feel, and that’s what brings them back. You paid out about €0.50 against €28 collected, under 2%. Generous from the customer’s side, almost painless from the till’s: that’s why the format works better in a coffee shop than elsewhere.

At ten visits, the customer is waiting on €35 of spend and gets back only 9%; you save a few cents per card. For a regular who comes five mornings a week, eight visits means a free drink every two weeks: often enough that they think about it as they push the door open.

Stamps or points for a coffee shop?

  • Stamps / visits

Stamps, without hesitation. Consumption repeats, the ticket varies little, and “the 9th free” is understood without explaining it.

  • Points on spend

Points only if takeout food or full meals weigh as much as the drink — in which case you’re no longer quite a coffee shop.

Stamps. It’s the only trade on the list where the question almost never comes up.

Eight visits, the ninth drink free

8 stamps, one per ticket. The 9th drink of your choice free, any size.

Setting up

Set up your loyalty card at your coffee shop

  • Keep the format everyone knows

The Xth drink free. This is no time to invent a mechanic: the strength of the format is that customers understand it without explanation.

  • Set X in money, not in stamps

Multiply the threshold you’re considering by your average ticket: that’s what the customer will have spent before their reward. The calculation below shows that a coffee shop’s margin lets you go lower than you think.

  • Put the QR code at register level

At hand height, not on the wall behind you. The customer scans while the drink is being made — that’s the dead time you’re looking to use.

  • Scan every order

The customer shows their card, you scan it from Cartia Counter, the stamp is confirmed. The gesture has to stay shorter than handing back change.

Smooth out the morning line

  • At the counter

Between 8 and 9:30 a.m., anything added to the visit gets paid for in the line. The scan happens during payment, with no extra step for the team.

  • In the Wallet, not in an app

The card sits next to the bank card, in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The customer scans the QR code, fills in a short form, and adds it — there is no app to install.

In your business, concretely

Two gestures, and it’s done

A coffee shop is where loyalty is most obvious and where the tool is abandoned fastest. Not because it’s bad: because it adds a step to a gesture that already has few. An espresso is ordered, paid for and drunk without anyone sitting down. Anything slotted into that has to fit in a flick of the wrist.

Hence a simple rule: there are only two gestures to know, and the team has to be able to explain them to a new hire in one sentence.

  1. First visitThe customer scans the QR code on the counter, fills in a short form, adds the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. You don’t get involved.
  2. Every visit afterThey show their card, you scan it during payment. The stamp is added to their pass; they have nothing to dig out of a bag.
  • Takeout coffeeThe visit is the shortest of all. Put the QR code at register height, never on a table: a customer standing up doesn’t lean in.
  • Sit-down coffee shopThe customer stays and often orders a second time. The card lets you count two visits without asking them to rescan for every cup: one stamp per ticket, not per drink.
  • Neighborhood caféThe regulars are already recognized by sight. What the card brings here isn’t recognition, it’s memory: you see which ones have stopped coming, and since when. To bring them back, seven campaigns ready to send: Drive-to-store: 7 campaign ideas with your Wallet card

A coffee shop’s year, and what the card does with it

A coffee shop doesn’t live at the same rhythm in September and in August. The program doesn’t change from one season to the next: what changes is when you offer it and what you say about it.

  • SeptemberBack-to-school resets morning habits. It’s the best moment to put out the QR code and offer the card, while customers are still choosing their commute coffee.
  • November to FebruaryThe cold brings people into the room in the afternoon, and the drinks menu changes. From Pro, a message tells your sign-ups the day the winter drinks arrive.
  • July and AugustOffices empty out, passing customers arrive. Don’t lower the threshold for them: they won’t finish the card. Your regulars who are away on vacation have theirs waiting in their phone, stamps included.
  • Annual closingFrom Pro, announce the reopening date to your sign-ups before you pull down the shutter. The day you reopen, they have the card at hand.

The calculation

How many extra drinks would cover the subscription?

With the assumptions below, 9 extra drinks sold in the month would cover the monthly cost of the Pro plan. Nothing guarantees those 9 drinks: the calculation only says at what point the subscription is covered.

Adjust my assumptions

If 10% of visits repeat one more time thanks to the card · €3.60 margin per drink

With these assumptions, the break-even point is

9 drinks / month

Beyond this threshold, the margin generated would cover the cost of the Pro plan. Formula: plan price ÷ (average basket × gross margin) = €29.90 ÷ €3.60.

  • +2,184drinks over the year
  • €874more revenue each month, with this assumption
  • €0.98per day for the Pro subscription

Frequently asked questions

Replacing the paper card at your coffee shop

How do I replace the paper stamp card at a coffee shop?

You generate your QR code, put it at register level, and validate each coffee from a phone or a browser. The customer scans once to join the program, then shows their card with every order. They install no app.

How many coffees before giving one away?

Eight visits, the ninth free. On an average drink of €3.50 that costs you about €0.50 in ingredients, the customer gets back 11% of what they spent and you pay out under 2%. Moving up to ten visits saves you only a few cents per card, and pushes the reward two visits further away.

Does it slow service during the morning rush?

Scanning a card that already exists fits in the time the machine is running. Signing up happens on the customer’s phone, not yours. One sentence for the team: “it’s on your phone, it’s not an app.” Anything longer and nobody will offer it after 8:30 a.m.

My customers already have a stamped paper card. Do we throw everything away?

No. When they pull out the old card, you carry the stamps over to the digital card. A few weeks with both in parallel, then the paper disappears. Those who no longer have the card — the most common case at the rush — start from zero, as with a lost paper card.

Do my customers have to download an app?

No. They scan the QR code displayed at the counter and add their card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet from their browser. It’s the same gesture as for a train ticket or a boarding pass.

Can I change the threshold or the reward later?

Yes. You adjust the program from your dashboard. It’s one of the differences from the paper card, frozen the day it leaves the printer: here, cards already handed out update in your customers’ phones.
